Why does my H/K AVR 247 rapidly overheats and switch off with the message "PROTECTION"

Why does my H/K AVR 247 get so hot that it switched off? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I will like to know as I have not really enjoyed the system since purchasing it early this year. I fear it might cause irreversible damage if it does not switch itself off. ...
